Silk is a great natural fabric that you can wear all year round. It is cool to wear in the summer months it naturally breathes and can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling damp., you don't feel sticky and you don't get that static feeling that happens when you wear synthetic fibres. In winter under a jacket it is unbelievably warm to wear and it just feels so soft and luxurious as it has natural temperature regulating properties. Although silk looks delicate in appearance it is the strongest natural fiber with high tensile strength and it is the most hypoallergenic of all fabrics.
As silk takes colour so well we are spoilt for choice with gorgeous prints and anything from bright reds to muted blues and pale blush pinks.

Silk not only plays a huge role in Vietnamese society, but it has also been integrated as a staple in Vietnamese culture. This luxurious fabric was once used as a type of currency in trade and lent itself as a medium to showcase Vietnamese beauty through art. Silk has played a big part in Vietnam’s history and economic development and still plays a prominent role in the culture today.

Today, Vietnam is recognized as one of the global silk producing countries in the world, in an industry which is attached to a long-lasting history in Vietnam of more than two thousand years.

In June I am travelling back to Hanoi to choose fabrics for spring/ summer 2017/18. This will involve multiple trips to the fabric markets and visiting small fabric merchants in and around Hanoi. This time my mother and sister join me, both fabric lovers we will be covering different parts of the markets ; while ill be looking at all the silk fabrics my sister will be found in the sparkly , stretchy lycra section to get inspiration for her amazing dance costumes that she makes in Auckland. Im hoping Mum will help me narrow down colour choices from the stacks and stacks of silk fabrics.
